IC Bus School Bus Exhaust Parts: Fitment by Engine and OE Number
Updated: Sep 10

IC Bus school bus exhaust fitment is set by engine, not by chassis badge. The same IC Bus body has carried Navistar's DT466 and VT365, the older T444E, the emissions-era MaxxForce line, and the current IC Gas 8.8L gas and propane engine, and the exhaust and aftertreatment parts change with each one. Matching the OE number off the failed part is faster and more reliable than matching a chassis name.
Why Engine Determines IC Bus Exhaust Fitment
IC Bus has run four distinct engine platforms across the buses on the road today, and each one uses its own exhaust and aftertreatment hardware:
DT466 and VT365: the largest group of IC Bus exhaust parts in the catalog, covering front pipes, turbo pipes, over-axle pipes, tailpipes, and hangers
MaxxForce, 2007 and up: emissions-era diesel that requires DPF, DOC, and EGR cooler service, in addition to standard exhaust components
T444E: an older diesel platform still common in the field, with its own tailpipe, V-clamp, and catalytic converter part numbers
IC Gas 8.8L, 2020 and up: the current gas and propane platform, using stainless steel front pipes, over-axle pipes, and diffusers built for that engine specifically
Downstream hardware like hangers and V-clamps is shared more widely across these platforms. Front pipes, turbo pipes, and aftertreatment components are not interchangeable between them.
IC Bus Exhaust Fitment Reference
Match on OE number first. IC Bus and Navistar International share catalog numbering for many parts, so the OE number and engine are the reliable pair, more reliable than the chassis name alone.

DPF-Equipped Versus Legacy IC Bus Exhaust Configurations
Whether an IC Bus needs DPF service parts depends entirely on engine, not model year of the bus body. MaxxForce engines, generally 2007 and up, require a DPF, a DOC, and an EGR cooler as part of normal exhaust service. DT466, VT365, and T444E engines predate that emissions requirement and do not use a DPF. The current IC Gas 8.8L gas and propane platform also does not use a DPF.
Confirming the engine before ordering aftertreatment parts matters more than confirming the bus model year. Two IC Bus units from the same production year can carry different engines with completely different aftertreatment requirements.
Buses on CE Series or RE Series chassis, rather than engine platform alone, are covered separately in the IC Bus fitment guide for CE Series and RE Series.
What to Confirm Before Ordering
Read the OE number off the failed part
Identify the engine, since front pipe, turbo pipe, and aftertreatment fitment all depend on it
For MaxxForce engines, confirm whether the part needed is DPF, DOC, or EGR cooler, since these are not interchangeable with each other
For tailpipes and over-axle pipes, note the exit side and discharge direction before ordering
Hanger failure and exhaust component failure travel together. The hanger replacement guide covers the inspection sequence.
Call 800-247-5391 or request a quote with the engine, year, and OE number off the failed part.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the same IC Bus exhaust part fit every engine?
No. IC Bus has run four distinct engine platforms, DT466, VT365, T444E, MaxxForce, and IC Gas 8.8L, and each uses different front pipes, turbo pipes, and aftertreatment hardware. Hangers and V-clamps are shared more widely, but upstream components must be confirmed by engine.
How do I know if my IC Bus needs a DPF?
MaxxForce engines, generally 2007 and up, require a DPF as part of normal aftertreatment service. DT466, VT365, and T444E diesel engines predate that requirement and do not use one. The current IC Gas 8.8L gas and propane engine does not use a DPF either.
What is the most reliable way to confirm IC Bus exhaust fitment?
Match the OE number stamped on the failed part, then confirm the engine. Chassis name alone is not enough, since the same IC Bus body has carried multiple different engines across its production years.
